While Canada, Russia, Venezuela and Nigeria all have large reserves, most of the world’s oil still comes from the Middle East. The region is home to around 56% of the planet’s oil reserves, with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq, Iran and the UAE being the largest producers. The Middle East is also home to extensive natural gas reserves, although Russia has by far thelargest supply. Companies operating in the Middle East offer a huge number of oil and gas jobs to geotechnical engineers from around the world, so if you’re qualified, experienced and prepared to travel, the region is an excellent place to develop your career.
Despite international concern over climate change, carbon emissions and sustainable energy, there’s never been a better time to be a geotechnical engineer. Energy use in the western world is rising steadily, while booming economies in China and India means their energy needs are increasingly exponentially as well. Although many countries are investing heavily in wind energy, solar power and hydroelectricity, fossil fuels are still the world’s principal source of energy. Skilled engineers are in demand the world over, and the most qualified geotechnical engineers have an extensive range of oil and gas jobs to choose from.
